Knicks draft son of NBA All Star to their G League team

The Westchester Knicks are going to feature a son of an NBA All Star.

In this weekend’s G League Draft, the New York Knicks’ affiliate snagged Jamal Mashburn Jr.

Mashburn Jr. went with the No. 8 overall pick in the G League Draft.

To be eligible, players have to be signed to a G League contract but not have currently been also attached to an NBA team.

Mashburn Jr. just finished up his five seasons of college basketball. His first four years were spent with New Mexico.

For 2024-25, Mashburn Jr. transferred to Temple.

With the Owls, Mashburn Jr. dropped 22 points per game while adding averages of 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He was a 43.1% shooter from 3-point range.

He’s the son of the former 6-foot-8 forward Jamal Mashburn.

The senior Mashburn was the No. 4 overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. He played for the Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Hornets.

The senior Mashburn averaged 19.1 points per game in his career and made one All Star team.

His son checks in as a 6-foot-2 point guard, not with all the height, but certainly with the right genes.

Maybe he’ll prove in Westchester that he belongs in professional basketball for a decade or more, which is what his dad pulled off.
