The New York Knicks have enjoyed overall success in 2024-25, though they’ve had to deal with the unfortunate absence of superstar point guard Jalen Brunson due to an ankle sprain suffered on Mar. 8 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
New York’s 5-time All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns has kept the team in a fantastic position as the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed with a current 46-27 record, but the franchise’s front office may realize that there are still plenty of leaps that must be taken in order for the group to be recognized as a true title contender.
It’s possible that the Knicks’ higher-up’s could believe another blockbuster offseason move is in order after their surprising acquisition of Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves prior to the beginning of this season.
In fact, New York may be a surprising trade suitor for 3-time All-Star and 2-time rebounding champion Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings, after it was reported that the big man could quickly grow frustrated with the organization and even request a trade in the near future.
“What is the direction of the Kings at this point?” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel wrote Friday afternoon.
“Many around the league are preparing for the possibility of the Kings becoming big sellers ahead of the 2026 NBA trade deadline next February, which would likely result in Sabonis requesting a trade should a clear direction not present itself.”

In a hypothetical negotiation between New York and Sacramento, the Knicks could get a deal across the finish line financially by offering to part with two-way star and 2019 NBA champion OG Anunoby along with their beloved young guard Miles McBride and draft capital.
At just 28 years old, Sabonis has authored a great career since being selected with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic.
The 6-foot-10 all-around star has contributed 18.9 points and a league-leading 14.0 rebounds while shooting 58.7% from the field and 40.6% from behind the three-point line in 62 appearances for the Kings this season.
Sabonis is set to take home his third consecutive rebounding title this year, and his prospective pairing with Towns in the Knicks’ frontcourt would mark the union of the league’s No. 1 and No. 2 glass-cleaners, as Towns has averaged a remarkable 12.8 boards in his debut campaign with the team.
The possibility of Sabonis taking the court for the Knicks on a nightly basis would surely be a nightmare for opponents in the East, as his introduction to the team would also mark the addition of a sensational play-maker and extremely versatile scorer from the center position that can allow the floor-spacing threat Towns to play the power forward position if need be.
Unfortunately, the idea Sabonis, Towns and Brunson forming a Big Three in the Big Apple will likely remain a fantasy.
