The New York Knicks boast an impressive starting five heading into the 2025-26 campaign, but the big question is how they’ll bolster their depth to help the team get over the hump.
New York lost to the Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals and faced criticism for former head coach Tom Thibodeau’s starter-heavy rotation. This summer, they’ll look to add a new head coach and more options to the roster.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Chris Paul is among the names to watch this summer. The Knicks could lose Cameron Payne, Delon Wright and Landry Shamet to free agency this offseason, which would leave them needing to explore other options in the backcourt.
Paul’s ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates would fit well in New York. Moreover, the 40-year-old point guard is still seeking his first title, and the Knicks could help him get there with their stacked roster.
The 20-year veteran remained an impactful player with the Spurs last season, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals across 28.0 minutes per game. He also appeared in all 82 regular-season games, becoming just the third player in NBA history to achieve that feat in their age-39 season. The others? Michael Jordan and John Stockton.
The Knicks could also explore adding more veteran players, according to Bondy. Al Horford is set to be an unrestricted free agent, and Nicolas Batum could decline his $4.9 million player option.
Both would provide a veteran presence in the second unit, and with Precious Achiuwa’s future with the Knicks uncertain, the team may need to look for frontcourt reserves.
