Knicks could acquire son of franchise’s former No. 12 overall pick

Much has been made about the New York Knicks’ need for another bench scorer.

New York would undeniably benefit from adding a bucket-getter to its rotation before the February 6 deadline, but their salary sheet isn’t very flexible.

The Knicks would need to be willing to move Mitchell Robinson’s $14.3 million in exchange for a player on a smaller contract than Robinson’s who also happens to improve New York’s rotation.

It turns out that such a player is available on the market, according to a new report from Forbes’ Evan Sidery this week.

“The (Orlando) Magic have gauged the trade market on Cole Anthony seeking to bolster their rotation,” Sidery said.

“Anthony is playing a career-low 11 minutes per game after averaging 13.5 points his first three years in Orlando.”

“Anthony’s salary is $12.9 million after signing a three-year extension.”

Anthony is an explosive scorer who would provide a surefire spark off the Knicks’ bench. He also happens to be the son of UNLV legend and NBA veteran-turned-broadcasting-star Greg Anthony, who was selected by New York at No. 12 overall in the 1991 NBA draft and enjoyed a decade-plus career in the Association.

Cole Anthony has been an impact player in Orlando since the Magic drafted him at No. 15 overall in 2020 out of North Carolina.

Should the Knicks make a move for Anthony, or would trading Robinson create a roster imbalance?
