Knicks announce contract decision on backup center

The New York Knicks announced two contract decisions on Sunday, exercising Ariel Hukporti’s $1.9 million team option, and declining P.J. Tucker’s $3.4 million team option, per SNY’s Ian Begley.

The decisions come just a day ahead of free agency, where the Knicks will look to make depth upgrades with the little financial means that they do have. The team only has the $5.7 million taxpayer exception and the league minimum to work with this offseason.

Per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks also extended a qualifying to Kevin McCullar.

Hukporti was largely out of the rotation this past season but did appear in 25 games, and started one game. He averaged 1.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in those appearances. He showed flashes of a strong rolling big man and defensive anchor.

Tucker signed two 10-day contracts with the Knicks back in March, and eventually signed a two-year deal with a club option for 2025-26, which the Knicks are declining. He appeared in just three games (one start), and averaged 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
