Knicks 10-year veteran guard receiving interest from top Western Conference team

New York Knicks free agent Cameron Payne had a decent season in New York a season ago, playing in 72 games and averaging 15.1 minutes per night.

Throughout the 2024-25 campaign, Payne shot 36.3% from 3-point range and averaged 6.9 points. While he isn’t much more than a backup guard, he still has some value around the league, and that’s been evident by how many teams she’s been on over the past few seasons.

According to a recent report from Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, he could join another team, as the Minnesota Timberwolves have reached out to him during the offseason.

Despite him noting that the final spot might go to Bones Hyland, it’s possible that they could be looking at a veteran like Payne, who understands what it takes to play every night.

“The Wolves have looked into several candidates for the spot, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne and Landry Shamet, league sources told The Athletic. However, all indications are that Bones Hyland is the front-runner to get that final spot, league sources said. Hyland signed a two-way contract with the Wolves in February, played briefly in Iowa and spent the rest of his time with the Timberwolves,” he wrote.

There haven’t been many rumors of Payne throughout the offseason, as he’s likely someone who will have to take a deal closer to training camp.

He’s undoubtedly an NBA player, so he should eventually find a team, but there are more questions about him than about some of the other players the Knicks still haven’t re-signed or are still on the market for New York to pursue as they have a roster spot.
