Key Chelsea target decides to leave current club

With a week to go before the summer transfer window shuts, Chelsea are still on the fence about signing a central defender to replace the injured Levi Colwill.

The English defender suffered an ACL injury in preseason and is expected to be out for a large part of the ongoing campaign.

While manager Enzo Maresca has been vocal about the need for a new centre-back, the Chelsea hierarchy believes they can find a solution from within their existing options.

Chelsea still have Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo to call on, but Maresca wants to add to his defensive options.

Additionally, if Chelsea don’t sign a centre-back, new signing Jorrel Hato might slot in at centre back in the months ahead.

But if Chelsea are going to fulfil Maresca’s demand, an exceptional defender has just made himself available on the market.

Piero Hincapie decides to leave Bayer Leverkusen

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Piero Hincapie has decided he wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen immediately, before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Chelsea are rumoured to be plotting a late move for Hincapie if thee Bundesliga giants are open to an offer.

If Chelsea play their cards right, the Ecuador international has a release clause of ÂŁ52m [$70m], making him an attainable target for the Blues.

Hincapie started Bayer Leverkusen’s last home game at the weekend and was seen in tears at the end of the match, in what could be seen as an emotional farewell to the home fans.

There is no guarantee Chelsea will even make a bid for the former Talleres man. However, based on his exit option, it would be a surprise if a defender of Hincapie’s quality did not get a transfer now he’s asked to leave.
