Kansas City Chiefs plummet in NFL power rankings before Week 2 Super Bowl rematch vs. Eagles

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking for all sorts of redemption on Sunday.

It’s Week 2 of the 2025 NFL regular season, and the Chiefs are looking for their first win. They take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of Philly’s February Super Bowl win.

The Chiefs want to get redemption from a season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Friday in Brazil. And they want to get at least a little revenge for the way the Eagles smoked them in the Super Bowl.

With that in mind, it’s worth checking in on how these teams match up in this week’s power rankings on The Sporting News, put together by Vinnie Iyer.

Kansas City fell from No. 4 to No. 8 in Iyer’s ranks this week.

“The Chiefs did not have enough Patrick Mahomes in a one-dimensional pass-heavy offense without Rashee Rice (and now Xavier Worthy) to pull it out late vs. the Chargers,” Iyer writes. “The pass defense concerns may linger with the Eagles next.”

If the Chiefs aren’t healthy, they’ll have a tough time against the Eagles.

The one bright side for Kansas City is that Jalen Hurts didn’t look great as a passer in their opening win over the Dallas Cowboys. He threw only 35% of his passes to wide receivers, the lowest rate of his career.

Hurts ran for a pair of touchdowns to complete drives anyway, but it wasn’t perfect.

Iyer is still a believer: He has the Eagles No. 1 for a second week in a row.

“The Eagles’ defense had a rough time early vs. the pass with its defensive line shakeup that faced an immediate Jalen Carter ejection,” Iyer writes. “The passing game also didn’t get a warmup. But when the team runs at a high level with Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley — the best rushing QB-RB 1-2 punch in the NFL — it doesn’t matter much.”

Carter’s suspension, or lack thereof, could have a big impact on this matchup. News on that should come shortly.

Worthy’s injury will hover over the week until his status is determined one way or the other.

And then in the late afternoon window Sunday, an instant classic will get underway.
