The Kansas City Chiefs are still formidable as can be. They’ve still got Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid, and electric defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
But the numbers do bear out at least a little cause for concern.
If it feels like the Chiefs’ offense hasn’t been as potent lately, that’s because it hasn’t been.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe shared this stat in a new article Friday:
“The Chiefs averaged 493 points during Mahomes’ first five seasons as the full-time starter, but just 378 over the past two seasons.”

A difference of 115 points on average per season works out to nearly a touchdown per game.
Maybe the main problem? The Chiefs’ personnel keeps changing.
“No one is diminishing Patrick Mahomes’ body of work, but the ongoing turnover in offensive personnel has taken a toll on his statistical production,” Howe writes.
Fantasy football players have surely noticed. Mahomes isn’t the points producer he once was.
For the most part, it hasn’t impacted Kansas City’s ability to win games. Spagnuolo always has the defense ready, and a more conservative Mahomes has still made big plays when they’ve needed them.
But coming off a humbling Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, there’s been fresh chatter this offseason. Mahomes has said multiple times he plans to throw down the field more.

The Chiefs seem to know they need that explosive offense back, at least to whatever extent they can revive it.
The six-game suspension for Rashee Rice won’t help the cause, but Kansas City will just have to push past that.
Mahomes and the Chiefs want to turn the potency back up again. And the season is just about here to start doing it.
