Justin Verlander contract details: Veteran pitcher agrees to one-year deal with Giants

Baseball’s oldest player will have a new home in 2025.

Justin Verlander is signing with the Giants, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The 41-year old might be past his best — his 2023 season fell way short of his Hall of Fame standards.

Still, form is temporary, while class is permanent. And if any hurler has showcased an ability to ward off the effects of Father Time, it’s Verlander, who is just two years removed from his third Cy Young trophy.

Here’s what you need to know about the terms of Verlander’s new contract.

Justin Verlander contract details

  • Years: 1
  • Value: $15 million

Verlander agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal with the Giants, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The contract marks a return to the National League for Verlander, who previously turned out for the Mets during the first half of the 2023 season.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner endured the worst season of his career in 2024, posting a 5.48 ERA across 90.1 innings with the Astros. Verlander’s peripherals were rather pedestrian when compared to his spellbinding best.

A decline was to be expected for the veteran, who will be playing in his 20th MLB season. Verlander made his debut in 2005 but missed most of the 2020 season and the entire 2021 season with an injury that required Tommy John surgery. He entered the 2024 season on the injured list due to a shoulder injury and missed nearly two months with a neck issue.

San Francisco is hoping Verlander can find the form from his impressive 2022 and 2023 campaigns. He joins Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Kyle Harrison in the Giants’ rotation and figures to attempt to fill the void left after Blake Snell’s offseason departure.

How old is Justin Verlander?

Verlander was born on Feb. 20, 1983, which makes him 41 years old now. He will be 42 during the 2025 season.
