TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, saw some excellent golf action all weekend. In the end, Justin Rose won a sudden-death playoff over J.J. Spaun. The event went three extra holes before Rose came away with the win.
Both players went back to the 448-yard, 18th hole, where Spaun went first and settled in between two bunkers in the rough. It was the third straight time he went near that spot on the weekend. Rose did not like his drive, and was within feet of the out-of-bounds near the water.
Spaun’s second shot from 171 yards got to the green, on the right side of the back-left hole. Rose, nearly standing in the water, put his second shot even closer than Spaun’s.
J.J. then went first from 36 feet on the green, and the 34-year-old nearly holed it before it missed within feet. He tapped his par putt in to set the stage for Rose.
Rose, who recently turned 45 years old, had his second chance to win the event and once again missed. This shot was three inches closer than the one he missed in regulation, from 13 feet.
In the second playoff, Spaun started again and hit a beautiful drive down the middle of the fairway. Rose’s drive was better, and he also went right down the middle of the fairway. Much improved from his first playoff drive.
Spaun’s second shot was from 160 yards, 36 more than Rose’s. He got to the green and set himself up for another chance at birdie. Rose nailed his second within feet of the hole. That’s when Spaun set up some dramatics, with a birdie putt, and Rose followed suit.

After a quick change of the hole placement, the two golfers were back at it. After successful drives, Spaun took his second shot from 154 yards out, and it was straight and rolled to within 10 feet of the hole. Rose had to follow suit. From 147 yards out, Rose also went right at the hole and landed it in a beautiful spot. Rose went first, and nailed his birdie putt to this time set the stage for Spaun. This time, it was not meant to be, as he missed, and Justin Rose became the winner following 21 holes.
The win took down Hideki Matsuyama, who won the event in 2024 and took home $3.6M of the $20M purse.
Rose was on fire late in the round with four straight birdies to put him in a tie heading to the 18th hole with J.J. Spaun. Rose had a beautiful drive on 18. His second shot came from the middle of the fairway, where he put it in a makeable spot, but he missed just right. That forced the playoff. He settled for a 31 on the back nine, following a 36 on the front nine.

Tommy Fleetwood, who led heading into the round, fell out of the lead with a bogey on the 17th hole, while J.J. Spaun birdied the 17th. Spaun almost hit another birdie at 18, but settled for par. Fleetwood then went into a bunker on his drive at the 18th hole. His second shot was from 121 yards, and he went well long, failing to reach the green. This was a hole where he recorded a bogey on both Friday and Saturday. His third shot and an attempt to stay alive for the tournament did not go down, and he settled for par. Fleetwood had a two-shot lead with three holes to play.
Scottie Scheffler was sharp again, but finished two strokes short at -15 for the weekend. Scheffler finished his final day at -3. He finished in a third-place tie with Fleetwood. Cam Young finished fifth, at -11.Â
Now, the top 50 players will head to Caves Valley Golf Club for the BMW Championship. The following weekend, the TOUR Championship will be played at East Lake in Atlanta. Keegan Bradley won that event in 2024 at Castle Pines Golf Club. That saw him take a share of the $20M prize purse, which was projected as $3.6M to the winner. Bradley finished the weekend -2, after going -3 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 44th.
One of the big stories was Jordan Spieth. After starting the day at -1 for the tournament, he went -2 on Sunday and finished -3. That put him in a tie for 38th with several other players. Spieth will not make the next round, as he is projected to finish 54. Now the question is whether he will be selected for the Ryder Cup later this season.

Tony Finau was not good at all on Sunday. He finished in a tie for 64th, after he went +6 on the final day. That was after three rounds where he finished at even. Shane Lowry and Jason Day also struggled in the tournament, as he finished tied for 56th and Lowry tied for 59th. Day will play next week, coming in at 44th. J.T. Poston was the final player to get in, at 50th.
