The Boston Celtics have a boatload of talent in their organization that floods beyond the NBA team and into their G League affiliate.
Guard JD Davison and guard/wing Drew Peterson — both on two-way contracts with Boston — exemplify that talent. Davison and Peterson earned championship rings with the Celtics last season and continue to play roles with both the NBA club and the G League Maine Celtics.
Davison, in particular, has shown tremendous growth this season, which has demanded the attention of Celtics players like Jrue Holiday, who recently praised Davison during an interview.
“He’s an NBA player,” Holiday said of Davison. “You can tell anytime he comes back (from the G League), and we throw him out there – he’s so comfortable. He fits right in.”
When Davison isn’t holding his own in the NBA, he dominates G League competition. Tuesday night was the most recent example, as the six-foot-one former Alabama guard went off for 38 points and 12 assists in a win over the Capital City Go-Go in round one of the G League Playoffs.
After the game, Davison talked about being inspired by his teammates on the NBA squad, especially when it comes to being a vocal leader on the floor.
“They told me to keep being me,” Davison said.
“Just watching guys like Payton (Pritchard), (Derrick White), and Jrue — they talk to guys, they tell (Jayson Tatum) things.”
It’s easy to root for a guy like Davison, who has shown steady improvement since Boston selected him with the No. 53 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft.
Davison has been a decorated player at every level. In high school, he was a McDonald’s All-American, Jordan Brand Classic selection, and two-time Alabama Mr. Basketball. In his one year playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Davison was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. And last season, due to his production in Maine, Davison was named to the All-NBA G League Third Team.
Davison’s hard work will soon be rewarded with a permanent move to the NBA. The Celtics are probably too loaded to have space for Davison, but another squad will definitely swoop in soon and give him a role.
