John Parry hole-in-one: Incredible ace propels English golfer’s climb up 2025 British Open leaderboard

Just as the United States audience was waking up and starting to tune in, England’s John Parry sank the first ace of this year’s British Open at Royal Portrush on Hole 13.

Parry came into the day 1-over, and the hole-in-one helped him shoot up the leaderboard. The eagle on No. 13 moved him to 4-under for the day, and a birdie later on No. 15 had him in a tie for 10th place with just three holes to go for his Saturday round. While the ace is an impressive feat on its own, Parry’s surge from over par to being in a tie for 10th place is one of the better runs in the tournament so far.

John Parry hole-in-one at British Open

There had been some close hole-in-one calls in the major so far, as golfers landed their par-3 tee shots within a few feet of the hole, but none had been able to pull it off until Parry. Because of how rare aces are, even amongst the best golfers in the world, the cameraman on the broadcast also completely missed it.

Parry teed off on the 192-yard No. 13. It looked like he hit a good shot, but the camera was zoomed out trying to find the ball landing on the green. By the time it started zooming in, the ball had already gone into the hole. The only way that viewers knew it went in was because of the announcer’s call and ensuing celebration. If you full-screen the clip above, you can just barely see the ball land on the green, bounce twice and then the third bounce is right into the cup.

The camera cuts back to the tee box, and Parry is shown celebrating with his caddy and his Saturday playing partner Justin Leonard who won the British Open in 1997.

It was the first ace of the 2025 British Open at Royal Portrush. When the major was held at this course in 2019, Argentinian golfer Emiliano Grillo also aced No. 13.

John Parry OWGR

Parry is ranked as the 116th player in the world per the OWGR. His highest ranking to date in his career was 91st, achieved following the 2025 Magical Kenya Open. While impressive, the ace at the British Open won’t raise his ranking on its own, but it should help better his score for the overall major, which could give him a bump.
