John Harbaugh extension, explained: Ravens keep head coach in Baltimore through 2028

One of the NFL’s longest-tenured coaches isn’t going anywhere.

The Ravens announced on Friday that they agreed to a three-year extension with head coach John Harbaugh, who was entering the final year of his deal. Harbaugh is now tied to Baltimore for the next four seasons, through 2028.

In 17 years as the Ravens head coach, Harbaugh has 13 winning seasons, which includes winning the Super Bowl during the 2013 season, along with just two losing seasons. Harbaugh is also third on the list of wins among active head coaches, behind only Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Since becoming the Baltimore Ravens in 1996, the organization has only had three head coaches over 28 seasons. Ted Marchibroda coached the first three years of the team, followed by Brian Billick’s eight-year tenure that included a Super Bowl victory. Among the three, Harbaugh has both the longest tenure and the most wins in franchise history.

Here’s a breakdown of what Harbaugh’s contract means.

John Harbaugh contract details

Harbaugh is signing a three-year extension with the Ravens, although the financials of the deal haven’t yet been reported.

This will be the eighth extension that Harbaugh signed with Baltimore, along with his initial four-year deal from when he was first hired in 2008.

Longest tenured NFL head coaches

With Bill Belichick’s departure from the Patriots after the 2023 season, Harbaugh became the second-longest active tenured head coach in the league, behind just Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

If Harbaugh sticks with the Ravens through the end of this contract, he will have coached one team for over 20 years, something that only seven coaches have done in NFL history.
