Joe Thuney trade details: Chiefs agree to send guard to Bears for draft pick

The Chiefs agreed to trade All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Bears for a draft pick on Wednesday.

The trade was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Thuney signed a five-year, $80 million contract with the Chiefs as a free agent in 2021. In Kansas City, he’s been named a first-team All-Pro twice, including last season.

Thuney spent the first five seasons of his career with the Patriots, where he was a key cog on the offensive line for New England’s last Super Bowl win in 2019. He was named a second-team All-Pro that season.

Thuney signed a five-year, $80 million contract with the Chiefs in 2021, a deal that runs through the 2025 season. He will make $15.5 million in his final year of the deal and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Per Spotrac, Thuney has accumulated $83,991,395 over his NFL career so far. The majority of that money came from his deal with Kansas City. The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Thuney in 2020, after his rookie contract expired.

Thuney has been a stalwart offensive lineman since his first season in the league, and he has the hardware to show for it.

Thuney has been named a first-team All-Pro twice (2023 and 2024) a second-team All-Pro twice (2019 an 2022) and Pro Bowler three times (2022, 2023 and 2024).

Joe Thuney Chiefs career

Thuney’s arrival in Kansas City helped the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls in 2023 and 2024, when he protected quarterback Patrick Mahomes as a right guard.

Thuney was moved to right tackle in 2024-25 after injuries and helped Kansas City reach its third consecutive Super Bowl, which it lost 40-22 to the Eagles.
