After a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw the team fall short of the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins will look to retool the roster in 2025 in order to get back into postseason contention.
But first, the Dolphins have to decide what to do with their pending free agents, with safety Jevon Holland being one of the biggest priorities. The former second-round pick has developed into one of the better safeties in the NFL and is sure to draw plenty of interest on the open market.
And it appears that’s where Holland is headed. Head coach Mike McDaniel stated the team is going to let the safety test the market to see what he’s going to command, but he didn’t rule out a return for the Oregon product.
Meanwhile, Holland is getting the impression that the Dolphins have already decided to move on from him based on the team’s social media activity.
“Transparently, seeing the Dolphins post things like the Valentine’s Day stuff or any type of edits and things like that. You can see guys that may not be here next year or may be somewhere else are just not in it,” Holland said on his Breakin’ House Rules podcast. “So, I’m like following them on Instagram, right, and I’m not in none of this s— no more. And I’m like, OK, they’ve kind of moved on.”
“I get it,” he added. “I understand the decision to do that because I would do the same thing if I was in the same position. But from my perspective, I’m just like watching it like, I get it but OK, this is kind of the effects of being a free agent.”
The problem for Miami is that the team is in a tough spot financially. Per Over the Cap, the Dolphins are projected to be just barely under the salary cap threshold at $722,955, which will obviously make it difficult to bring Holland back.
With all that in mind, Nick Shook of NFL.com believes Holland could end up leaving for a deal with the New York Jets in free agency.
Jevon Holland and the Dolphins seem to be headed in different directions, but that doesn’t diminish his value as an up-and-coming safety with an early chance to cash in and improve his on-field situation. A move north would pair Holland with Aaron Glenn, who is very familiar with life as a defensive back, and would give the Jets’ new regime an ascending talent who could help return the teeth to the defense. Plus, poaching a young playmaker like Holland from a division rival would only further fuel the animosity shared among the three AFC East teams staring up at the Buffalo Bills.
Safety is one of the needs the Jets have to address this offseason, so Holland would be a great match for Gang Green.
According to Spotrac, Holland is projected to land a four-year, $60.2 million deal in free agency. The Jets are slated to have roughly $23 million in cap space before making any move, so Holland is a realistic option for them.
Dolphins fans won’t love the fact that Holland moves on in free agency this year, and it would be an even tougher pill to swallow if he ends up staying in the AFC East.
