Jets rookie forming critical connection with Justin Fields

The NFL world is not very high on the New York Jets’ collection of pass catchers. Aside from superstar receiver Garrett Wilson, who was recently voted as a Top 10 receiver in the NFL, there’s not very many reliable options for quarterback Justin Fields to target. That’s why the development of rookie tight end Mason Taylor and his chemistry with Fields will be so vital in 2025.

Selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft, the former LSU Tiger is expected to shoulder a heavier load in the offense than most rookie tight ends typically do, so it’s a good sign to see him clicking early and often with his quarterback. In Friday’s practice, which was by far Justin Fields’ best day of training camp, Taylor pulled in yet another touchdown pass from Fields in an 11-on-11 team period.

Following Saturday’s practice, Taylor spoke to the media and was asked about his growing relationship with Fields. He mentioned that it’s the kind of thing that can’t be rushed, that it just comes with ‘time in practice’. You can listen to his full remarks below, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the New York Jets.

It’s a very mature response from the young rookie, and that has to be exciting for Gang Green. Fields already has a built-in relationship and chemistry with Wilson. The two of them played college football together for two years at Ohio State and, despite playing on different teams for their first four NFL seasons, Fields and Wilson quickly rediscovered that chemistry.

Wilson will therefore likely command the lion’s share of targets in the regular season, but the No. 2 spot is up for grabs. Receiver Josh Reynolds is making a case to be the favorite, but Taylor just might be that guy for Fields, after all. If he can prove to be a reliable receiving option, specifically in the redzone where he appears to be doing his best work in training camp, then this Jets offense that was projected to be among the league’s worst should prove a lot of critics wrong.
