The New York Jets are likely sellers at the upcoming NFL trade deadline. Less than two to go before the deadline, and multiple Jets players are named as trade candidates.
While Jermaine Johnson is likely off the block, a few other Jets players are still worth monitoring. Breece Hall is an obvious trade chip, but another star has emerged as a potential option despite a huge asking price.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Jets’ star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is drawing trade interest, with a “massive” asking price attached to the All-Pro.
Jets’ Quinnen Williams drawing trade interest with ‘massive’ price tag
“Keep an eye on the Jets; teams have been showing interest in DT Quinnen Williams,” Russini reports, “although New York’s asking price is massive.”
Moving on from a player like Williams won’t be cheap for an acquiring team, but landing such a star player would be a massive boost for their defense.
While a trade isn’t likely, since moves of that magnitude aren’t common at the trade deadline, it’s worth keeping an eye on as the Jets aren’t completely shutting down trade talks like they would with Sauce Gardner or Garrett Wilson.
Williams is signed through the 2027 season on a huge $96 million deal. If he is moved, the Jets would save a lot of cap space, with $16.6 million in savings and only $4.9 million in dead cap space.
But moving on from an All-Pro player like Williams won’t come cheap. He’s 27 years old and having another solid year. Through seven weeks, he has one sack and 31 tackles with seven tackles for loss.
More: Jets’ Aaron Glenn shares two-word message on Breece Hall trade rumors
He’s made three straight Pro Bowls and has shown he can be one of the best defenders in the NFL with his 12-sack 2022 season. Any team trying to acquire him will have a tough time giving up the resources the Jets are asking for.
But, if a team desperately needs interior defensive line help, and envisions Williams as the difference maker they need to round out their defense, then the lofty price tag might be worth it.
The chances of a trade are slim, but with the cap savings, trade rumors, and potential for Aaron Glenn to see Williams as not one of his guys, a trade can’t be thrown out just yet.
At 0-7, the Jets making some big changes at the deadline wouldn’t be the most surprising thing, especially if they drop Week 8 to the Cincinnati Bengals and enter their bye and the deadline without a win.
