The Jets’ quarterback plans don’t always match the Jets’ quarterback reality.
After Zach Wilson went down in New York’s 2022 preseason opener and Aaron Rodgers infamously tore his Achilles in the 2023 regular season opener, the Jets saw their season flash before their eyes again on Thursday when newly-minted starter Justin Fields was carted off the practice field at training camp.
Fields is dealing with a toe injury, according to coach Aaron Glenn, who wasn’t sure of the severity. While the news of a toe injury rather than a more serious issue is positive for the Jets, the path forward for the former Bears and Steelers quarterback is still unclear.

Jets QB depth chart
Rank | QB |
No. 1 | Justin Fields |
No. 2 | Tyrod Taylor |
No. 3 | Adrian Martinez |
No. 4 | Brady Cook |
1. Justin Fields
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets in March to be the team’s starting quarterback after Rodgers was released.
While some wondered whether Fields would get a starting job handed to him in free agency, he was pursued by both the Jets and Steelers, with Pittsburgh looking to retain him despite sending him to the bench once Russell Wilson got healthy in 2024. Fields went 4-2 as a starter with the Steelers and has flashed dynamic ability on the ground since entering the NFL, but the Jets are hoping to get more out of his arm than what he has shown to this point in his career.
2. Tyrod Taylor
35-year-old Tyrod Taylor is in line to serve as Fields’ direct backup and would take over if Fields missed any practice or game time. The veteran, now in his 15th NFL season, has started games for four teams and appeared in games with seven teams, including relief stints with the Jets in 2024. Even if Fields turns out to be fine following the toe injury, Taylor will remain ready to step in throughout the season.

3. Adrian Martinez
Former Nebraska and Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez served as the Jets’ emergency No. 3 quarterback in 2024 after going undrafted. While Martinez didn’t appear in a game, he stuck around for training camp this season and has the chance to again earn the No. 3 job. Martinez was often limited as a passer during his college career, but he rushed for 627 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games in his lone season at Kansas State before heading to the NFL.
4. Brady Cook
The Jets took a flier on undrafted Missouri QB Brady Cook in the spring, bringing him in to compete with Martinez for the No. 3 role behind Fields and Taylor. Cook impressed with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions for the Tigers in 2023, but he took a step back along with the rest of Missouri’s offense in 2024, tossing only 11 touchdowns in 10 games. Cook largely avoided turnovers at Missouri, which likely appealed to the Jets after he went undrafted.
