Jets’ Kyle Connor gets $12 million contract prediction

What will it take for the Winnipeg Jets to retain Kyle Connor?

Connor, 29 in December, has one year remaining on his deal at a tad over $7.142 million. The Jets, who have managed their money well lately, have over $10.5 million in cap space and could eventually dedicate some expiring money, such as Gustav Nyquist’s $3.25 million or Luke Schenn’s $2.75 million, to the Connor fund.

NHL Insider Frank Seravalli had this to say about Connor’s upcoming contract:

“I would peg that next contract somewhere between $11 and $12 million AAV; obviously a huge priority for the Jets to get done.”

Canadian teams, particularly western ones, have long struggled to retain marquee free agents, especially Americans like Connor. Even if he creeps above the $12 million annually asking price, Winnipeg should be willing to hand over a blank check.

Forwards like Connor do not come around often, and if the Jets are finally going to exorcise their playoff demons, he needs to be a catalyst.

Since his first full season with Winnipeg in 2017-18, Connor has grown into a virtual lock for 30+ goals and 30+ assists. He is also coming off a 41-goal, 97-point outburst and should record similar numbers in this crucial walk year.

The Jets also have to figure out what to do with pending restricted free agent Cole Perfetti. They should be able to land him on a bridge deal, but they will need to be delicate with their finances.

For now, Winnipeg’s focus should remain on Connor, and it will be interesting to see how much it is willing to commit to him.
