Jerry Jones in Landman, explained: The story behind that viral scene with Jon Hamm, Billy Bob Thornton

Landman is a drama in its first season on Paramount+. The ninth episode of the series about oil tycoons featured someone very close to the NFL world.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones delivered a heartfelt speech to Jon Hamm’s character. Jones plays himself and draws upon his own experience in the oil business and purchasing the Dallas franchise, including the effect it had on his relationship with his family.

The reception has been largely positive. Many were blown away by Jones’ performance and just how real it was. Certain Cowboys fans were expecting the biggest team news from the day to be the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy and weren’t thrilled that Jones was getting all of this praise for the scene.

Here is everything you need to know about Jones’ Landman scene and more information about the Cowboys team owner.

Jerry Jones Landman scene

Here is a transcription of the scene by Jones:

[Addressing Hamm] “Now, I’m not saying I’ve done anything right, but I made my mind up a long time ago, I was gonna work with my kids. And they’re involved in everything. They’re involved in my leasing, oil and gas, real estate. And so when I got the Cowboys, I got it so that we could all work together.

I thought I was doing it for them. But the one that got the most out of it was me.

I just know it’s not gonna be this time, but you’re going to be sitting here sometime in the future, laying here sometime in the future, and this room’s gonna be full of your business associates and the people you’ve worked with all your life. And more than likely, your children and family are gonna be there because they’re your children and your family.

But you could have ’em there because they’re the people you spent your life with, you worked with, you fell down with, you got up with. Not just Thanksgiving, Christmas. That’s who you want to be with.

So when that time comes like this, it’s a celebration of your life, and you’re not wishing you’d spent a little more time seeing a few more suns come up. That’s the trick, that’s the trick. ‘Cause that’s gonna be your glory.

I’m pretty proud of them Cowboys. I’m pretty proud of the stuff we’ve done and oil and gas. It pales in comparison to how proud I am to have lived my life working with my kids.

You got a chance to do something about that. I hope you will.”

[Addressing Thornton] “And I’ll tell you, young man, you’re no spring chicken. And you ought to listen to a little of this yourself.”

[Addressing both] “Think a lot of both you guys.”

[Addressing Hamm] “Okay, don’t make me get my rubber glove out.”

Why is Jerry Jones in Landman?

Landman is in its first season and originally aired on Nov. 17 on Paramount+. It’s a show set in West Texas and focuses on the oil business.

The show’s plot revolves around Billy Bob Thornton, who plays Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman and vice president of an oil company. A landman performs various tasks for companies conducting gas and oil exploration.

In the ninth episode, aired on Jan. 5, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones appears. The character played by Jon Hamm is (spoiler) hospitalized and is visited by Billy Bob Thornton’s character and Jones.

The Dallas owner delivers an extremely well-done speech about his purchase of the Cowboys and how it has affected his family. You can tell the emotion that Jones speaks with, and it causes the monologue to become very real, only enhancing the critically acclaimed drama.

Jerry Jones oil company name

Jones began an oil and gas exploration company in Arkansas, aptly named Jones Oil and Land Lease, which became wildly successful. He also bought into Comstock Resources, which is “engaged in oil and gas acquisitions, exploration and development.”

How did Jerry Jones make his money?

Jones graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1964. He initially borrowed money from Jimmy Hoffa’s Teamsters union and used it to open several Shakey’s Pizza Parlors. This venture ended up failing, and Jones got his Master’s degree while working for his father’s insurance company.

Jones had several failed business ventures, including his attempt to use more Teamsters Union money to purchase the then-San Diego Chargers. Jones then struck gold, almost literally, with his oil and gas exploration company.

The company is still active and now does “natural resource prospecting.”

Is Jerry Jones selling the Cowboys?

As much as some fans may want him to, Jones doesn’t seem to be selling the Cowboys.

The franchise has always been about family with Jones, so while he may step away from his role with the team, it is very likely that his sons will move up further in the organization, keeping ownership in the family.
