Lionel Messi paved the way to Inter Miami’s 4-2 win against CF Montreal in Major League Soccer by scoring a brace and providing an assist.
Their victory on May 28 at Chase Stadium marked an end to their winless streak. Now, the Herons stand sixth in the MLS table with 26 points in 15 matches.
Inter Miami’s recent underwhelming form has brought in heavy criticism, especially against head coach Javier Mascherano, who took charge in November last year.
Recently, reports suggested that Inter Miami could be considering the dismissal of Mascherano, and have identified Liga MX side Club America Andre Jardine as the Argentine’s potential replacement.
However, despite these reported uncertainties about his future, Mascherano appeared to be optimistic about Inter Miami’s chances in the upcoming matches following their win against Montreal.
What did Javier Mascherano say about Inter Miami?
Speaking after the clash, Mascherano mentioned (comments via GOAL) how his squad ‘needed to break that negative streak’ and expressed being ‘pleased with the win.’

“The storm has passed, and the sun is out. We needed to break that negative streak. I already had good feelings after the second half in Philadelphia – not just because we came from behind, but considering the level of the opponent, a team fighting for the top places in the conference. I’m pleased with the win. The team played the way we know how to again,” Mascherano said.
Mascherano was forced to make three changes in the first half itself due to injuries. However, that incident did not seem to bring him down as he appreciated his squad’s ‘unity’ and determination to overcome adversity.’
“We’ll have to assess Jordi’s situation. With Ávila, it was an ankle issue, and we decided to take him off. It was an unusual situation to have to make so many changes so early. But it also shows the unity of this group and their determination to overcome adversity. This is the right path forward. These moments can make a team stronger in the long run,” said Mascherano.
Inter Miami are set to lock horns with Columbus Crew in their upcoming MLS match on May 31, at Chase Stadium.
