Jalen Milroe update could signal Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round interest

While the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be in line to land Aaron Rodgers in free agency, it’s very possible the team will explore adding a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

After all, Rodgers is going to be 42 this year and is only going to offer a short-term solution, if he joins Pittsburgh at all. The Steelers should not wait for that to happen and instead need to set themselves up for the future.

There have been plenty of rumblings about the Steelers’ interest in Alabama signal-caller Jalen Milroe, who is one of the more polarizing players in this year’s class.

Many believe Milroe has all the tools but also think he’s going to be a massive project, which has led to projections being all over the place. We’ve seen Milroe mocked to a team in Round 1 (the Steelers have been one of those squads), and we’ve seen him projected to go on Day 2 or 3.

On Sunday, we got a massive update on the young quarterback, with The Athletic’s Dan Brugler reporting that Milroe has accepted an invitation to attend the draft in Green Bay, which could signal he’s got a first-round grade from at least one team.

What team that could be remains to be seen, but it’s not outlandish to think that it may be the Steelers. Earlier this offseason, FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd revealed that he heard the Steelers could have interest in Milroe in the first round.

“I talked to an NFL exec last night, very well-connected, and this is a keep your head on a swivel, Aaron Rodgers. I’m told the Steelers really like Jalen Milroe. Twenty-first pick, first round,” Cowherd said. “So if Aaron signs with Pittsburgh, it’s gonna become Kirk Cousins. They’re taking a quarterback. If the 21st pick, Milroe’s not taken, Pittsburgh is leaning now and taking him.”

While we can certainly debate how good or bad taking Milroe with the No. 21 pick is, there’s no denying that the Steelers would be a good landing spot for him.

As we previously mentioned, the expectation is that Milroe is going to need more time to develop. Assuming the Steelers sign Rodgers or bring in another veteran starter, Milroe will have the benefit of sitting for at least one season without pressure.

There are no doubt going to be some surprises in the 2025 NFL draft, as is the case every single year. Milroe going in the first round — and especially at No. 21 — would qualify as a surprise.
