The NFL preseason isn’t usually filled with exciting moments like we see in the regular season.
The games are very experimental, with a variety of players usually getting playing time in each game.
It’s hard to judge a player’s performance in preseason games, but one player just accomplished a feat that is no fluke at all.
What record was broken?
On Saturday night, the Jaguars played a preseason game against the Steelers.
The Jaguars trailed 6-14 with a few seconds remaining before halftime when second-year kicker Cameron Little ran onto the field for a field goal attempt, as time expired.
This wasn’t your average field goal attempt, though. Little was put out to attempt a 70-yard field goal.
Somehow, he was able to nail the kick perfectly through the uprights. Not only did it go through, but it went through pretty comfortably.
Kickers are one of the few players who can be judged fairly in NFL preseason games. You either have a good leg or you don’t.
This 70-yard kick not only broke the previous record for the longest converted kick, but it destroyed the record by several yards.
Justin Tucker kicked an iconic walk-off field goal for an NFL record, 66 yards, in 2021.
Even for one of the all-time greats like Tucker, it required some luck. His 66-yard field goal bounced off the bottom post and went through the uprights. A little less power from Tucker, and the kick wouldn’t have gone through.
Little was able to clear that kick by four yards, without even needing the help of a lucky bounce. His 70-yard field goal might have been good from a couple more yards out.
Little is returning for his second season in the league, after a 2024-25 season where he played 17 games, converting 27/29 field goals.
