Jaguars cut ties with former 1st-round pick

Before the 2024 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed a former first-round pick to bolster their secondary.

But the move didn’t work out. Only two weeks into the 2025 NFL regular season, the Jags have released him.

The player: Darnell Savage, the safety.

The Jags announced his release on Tuesday afternoon.

Savage was originally the No. 21 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Maryland by the Green Bay Packers.

He spent his first five seasons in Green Bay. Savage picked off nine passes in that span while notching 302 tackles in 72 games.

Savage signed with the Jaguars for the 2024 season and played 13 games in his debut season with the Jags, snatching one interception and finishing with 51 tackles and six passes defensed.

This season, Savage did appear in the Jaguars’ first two games, but he didn’t start either. He had just one total tackle.

Clearly, Savage had fallen out of favor with the Jags.

Still just 28 years old, Savage will likely have a number of suitors in free agency.

The Packers could even be in play.

Regardless of where Savage ends up, he goes down as a free agent whiff by the Jaguars, whose path to contention can’t afford misses on veteran free agents like this.
