Jack Hughes adds fuel to the Quinn Hughes-New Jersey Devils speculation

Two-thirds of the Hughes brothers are already teammates on the New Jersey Devils, though it might not be long before all three are playing together in the Garden State.

Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes are the now and future in New Jersey, up front and on defense, while their brother, Quinn Hughes, is leading the way as the best player and captain of the Vancouver Canucks.

Prior to the 2024-25 season, the Canucks seemed to be on the rise. However, a drama-filled year changed everything and has sparked concern that Hughes could soon want out, specifically to join his brothers in New Jersey.

President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford admitted to it during his year-end press conference, and Jack Hughes isn’t shying away from the idea either. The Devils’ superstar was asked about it during his interview at the NHL Player Media Tour on Tuesday, and TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun shared his response on X (formerly Twitter).

“This is the headline question, you know? Honestly, I’m not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to—eventually I’d love to play with him. And whether that’s in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point I want to play with Quinn. But yeah, that’s the question going around. They talk all day about it up in Vancouver, you know? But yeah, I’d love to play with Quinn at some point,” Hughes said.

Quinn Hughes has two years remaining on the six-year, $47.1 million contract extension he signed with the Canucks back in 2021 and is eligible to become a UFA after the 2026-27 season.

Is Quinn Hughes to New Jersey inevitable?

The Hughes brothers teaming up at some point in their NHL careers seems likely, but the question is, how far down the road will it actually happen?

It really all comes down to this upcoming season for Quinn Hughes and the Vancouver Canucks.

If things go well and the Canucks get back to the way they looked in 2023-24, then perhaps they can convince their captain to extend. On the other hand, if Vancouver gets off to a poor start, then this situation is going to get very loud.

Either way, Quinn Hughes and the Vancouver Canucks will be a fascinating team to follow in 2025-26, with so much on the line.
