It hasn’t taken long for Matthew Schaefer to make an NHL impact for the New York Islanders.
The No. 1 overall pick has started his career in fine fashion.
That included a record on Saturday for the Islanders.
He became the youngest player in NHL history to play at least 25 minutes in a game. That broke Sidney Crosby’s record, according to beat reporter Ethan Sears.
Schaefer, who played Saturday’s game at 18 years and 36 days old, had a fantastic night.
He scored his first NHL goal, with it coming on the power play. He was super active, firing eight shots on goal.
Schaefer also blocked a shot.

He played long shifts. Schaefer had played 23 shifts and totaled 17 minutes in his NHL debut. This time, he played 25 shifts but upped his minutes all the way to 26 minutes and four seconds. It helped to get more power play time.
Schaefer has scored in each of his first two games, having put up an assist in game one before getting this goal.
It’s clear the Islanders know how special Schaefer is, and he’s quickly showing the rest of the hockey world that the hype is well deserved, too.
Breaking a Crosby record is never a bad way to garner some more proper attention, too. Sid the Kid has company in the record books.
