Is there any update on Lions and Za’Darius Smith? Here’s what Brad Holmes said Thursday

There is no denying that the Detroit Lions need more help at edge rusher, which is why so many fans are clamoring to see the return of Za’Darius Smith.

The Lions needed more help along the edge even before Smith was released earlier this offseason, so cutting the veteran only made the situation more dire.

Aidan Hutchinson is coming back from a serious injury, Marcus Davenport has been unreliable in terms of availability throughout his career, and the Lions won’t have Josh Paschal (NFI list) or Ahmed Hassanein (waived with injury settlement) as backup options, although both will be back at some point.

For the first time since cutdown day, general manager Brad Holmes spoke to the media and was once again asked about a possible reunion with Smith.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have an update.

“Anything’s a possibility at any point. I don’t know what’s gonna happen,” Holmes said of Smith, before adding that the two sides haven’t had any talks recently.

Holmes went on to add that while the team has one open roster spot, it isn’t specifically being saved for Smith.

“It’s for the player that makes the most sense for us. Whoever that player may be,” Holmes said.

In his last comments on Smith before these, Holmes did note that the team is still interested in Smith, who has made it quite clear he wants to return to Detroit.

There is no question the Lions could use the veteran edge rusher with the current state of their edge rusher group, but with the season rapidly approaching, it’s becoming more and more possible another team will scoop him up instead.
