Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras score: Club World Cup result, stats as draw earns Messi date with PSG in knockouts

With their knockout stage chances in their own hands, Inter Miami played to a thrilling 2-2 draw with South American giants Palmeiras in Miami on Monday, qualifying both clubs for the Round of 16 at this summer’s Club World Cup.

The Herons were exceptional for much of the game, as goals by Taedo Allende and Luis Suarez put the MLS club 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go.

Ultimately, they ran out of steam down the stretch, as two goals in the final 10 minutes allowed Palmeiras to secure a point and avoid a last-gasp disaster.

It sets up a mouth-watering date for Lionel Messi with his former club PSG in the Round of 16, while Palmeiras also secure a highly-anticipated matchup against fellow Brazilian side Botafogo.

The other Group A match, played simultaneously, saw Porto finish level in a 4-4 thriller with Al Ahly, but that result ultimately didn’t matter as the draw between these two sides meant those below them could not catch up regardless of how it played out.

Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras live updates, highlights from Club World Cup

FULLTIME: Inter Miami 2-2 Palmeiras

That’ll do it, and both of these teams qualify for the knockout stage! Porto and Al Ahly have drawn a wild one at 4-4, but it doesn’t matter as any draw between these two clubs see them both go through!

This was a fantastic match in Miami, as Inter Miami hung right with one of the best teams in South America, but just ran out of steam after defending so much.

As a result, Lionel Messi will have a date with his former club PSG in the Round of 16, which is a truly mouth-watering affair!

90+4 min: Chance, Palmeiras! OSCAR USTARI WITH A MASSIVE SAVE ON PAULINHO WITH THE FINAL KICK OF THE GAME! Paulinho was clean through down the left, but Ustari stonewalls the shot!

87th min: GOAL! PALMEIRAS! WE’RE LEVEL AS MAURICIO ABSOLUTELY SMASHES THE BALL INTO THE BACK OF THE NET! AN EQUALIZER WITH AUTHORITY!

Maxi Falcon heads clear a delivery into the penalty area, but it only falls as far as the Palmeiras substitute who blasts it in from 15 yards out! He’s rippled the net!

85th min: Chance, Palmeiras! A save by Oscar Ustari on Mauricio who takes a shot from just inside the top of the penalty area, shaded just to the left!

80th min: GOAL! PALMEIRAS! PAULINHO PULLS THE BRAZILIAN SIDE ONE BACK! The Inter Miami defense looks absolutely cooked, and he gets a through-ball from right up the gut from Allan, leaving only Noah Allen to challenge, but his step is late, and the weak effort slow-rolls past Oscar Ustari into the back of the net! Game on!

76th min: Federico Redondo has gone down twice in the last three minutes with cramps, and he cannot play on, leaving referee Szymon Marciniak to call out the stretcher. Redondo turns down the stretcher and walks off under his own power, replaced by Baltasar Rodriguez while Taedo Allende also comes off for Fafa Picault.

72nd min: Palmeiras have been so sloppy in the buildup. Paulinho gets forward and has Palmeiras breaking with numbers, but his cutback to the middle is behind its target, and the chance goes begging.

Down the other end a long ball from Luis Suarez is his last action, as he looks to find Lionel Messi, but it’s just too far for the Argentine and out of reach, and Messi crumbles to the ground awkwardly. He gets up slowly, as Suarez is replaced by Benjamin Cremaschi.

65th min: GOAL! INTER MIAMI! LUIS SUAREZ COOKS THREE DEFENDERS AND PUTS INTER MIAMI 2-0 UP! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? Who knew he had that in his bag?!?!?!?! That’s ludicrous!

The aging striker turns back the clock, first by splitting two defenders by just bullying his way between them, and then he skips past Bruno Fuchs with the help of a deflection. That leaves him free on goal, and he finishes calmly to double the Herons’ lead! A truly exceptional goal!

After the goal, Jordi Alba replaces Telasco Segovia, while Palmeiras make their final changes with Vitor Roque and Allan coming on for Marcos Rocha and Lucas Evangelista.

60th min: As we pass the hour mark of this match, a check of the other game sees Porto and Al Ahly trading goals like they’re hotcakes. It’s 3-3 after goals in the 50th minute, 51st minute, and 53rd minute. What a bonkers match!

58th min: Lionel Messi rifles a looping shot that fizzes over the crossbar! It’s not terribly close, as it didn’t have the required dip, but it’s a reminder for Palmeiras that the Argentine legend will take aim when given the chance!

53rd min: Chance, Inter Miami! Taedo Allende is clean through on goal again, getting behind the Palmeiras high line, but this time Joaquin Piquerez recovers just in time to pressure the chance, and his shot goes wayward across the face of goal and past the far post! A HUGE chance that goes begging!

Shortly after, Palmeiras make another substitution as Paulinho comes on to replace Facundo Torres, who looks gassed in the Miami heat. He should be used to this Florida weather!

51st min: Luis Suarez gets a talking to from Szymon Marciniak after a heavy touch sees the ball get away and he goes in two-footed on Gustavo Gomez to try and win it back. He gets the ball with his studs up, but his trailing leg catches Gomez and draws the whistle.

49th min: Chance, Inter Miami! Lionel Messi has room for a shot from a central position, but he scuffs the ball and rolls it weakly to the goalkeeper!

2nd half kickoff: As they get the second half under way in Miami, Palmeiras have made a change at the break, as Raphael Veiga is withdrawn and Mauricio brought on to replace him at the No. 10 position.

HALFTIME: Inter Miami 1-0 Palmeiras

The Herons are 45 minutes away from a shocking spot in the Round of 16, as they lead on the Taedo Allende goal!

Inter Miami have played very well, and while both sides have been occasionally sloppy on the ball, giving the opponent chances, it’s been Palmeiras who have been hurt the most by those mistakes. The Herons, meanwhile, have defended exceptionally well, even when put under pressure by their own errors.

A gripping game with high stakes and implications, as well as a killer atmosphere!

44th min: Palmeiras have a penalty shout, as Richard Rios goes down under an admittedly soft foul by Noah Allen on the very edge of the penalty area.

As play continues, Inter Miami go down the other end of the pitch, but when they lose the ball, Lionel Messi clips his opponent to prevent a Palmeiras counter and is booked by Szymon Marciniak. There’s a decently long VAR check for the Rios penalty shout, but eventually play is waved on!

40th min: Inter Miami have largely held Palmeiras in check with long spells of nothing possession. The only times they’ve really been under pressure is when they’ve given the ball away while trying to play out the back.

That is how Palmeiras earn their fourth corner of the match, but the near-post delivery finds the head of Jose Lopez whose tight-angle header is over the crossbar.

33rd min: Chance, Palmeiras! Oh dear, Inter Miami nearly gifted Palmeiras an equalizer! Maxi Falcon gives it away just outside his own penalty area while trying to play out of the press, and it’s worked quickly to Facundo Torres. The former Orlando City playmaker appears to have gone too lateral and ruined his opportunity for a shot, but he brilliantly cuts the ball along the face of goal, finding a window for a seemingly impossible shot, but it skitters just inches wide! So so close to a level match!

32nd min: Estevao cuts inside from the right wing onto his left foot and works space for a shot, but Maxi Falcon does well to step in front and provide enough pressure to cause the Palmeiras winger to fire his effort into the stands.

28th min: Chance, Inter Miami! Luis Suarez has a wide-open shot on the counter, but he rushes it and crashes the effort into a Palmeiras defender! He has acres of space to get the ball settled and pick out a corner, but instead tries to take it first-time and comes up empty!

Inter Miami have been vicious in transition, causing Palmeiras all kinds of problems.

22nd min: In the other Group A game taking place simultaneously, Al Ahly have sensationally gone in front of Porto, but then Porto have struck back and leveled the score at 1-1!

16th min: GOAL! INTER MIAMI! TAEDO ALLENDE PUTS INTER MIAMI IN FRONT! It comes off a heavy spell of Palmeiras pressure, but when they lose the ball on a hoofed clearance, Luis Suarez flicks the ball to send Allende clean through on goal!

The Argentine was all by himself, leaving only Murilo in position to recover for a challenge before the effort on goal. Instead, the Palmeiras defender pulls up lame and faceplants as if shot, looking to have injured himself trying to catch up!

Murilo comes off with what appears to be a hamstring injury and goes straight down the tunnel, replaced by Bruno Fuchs on the restart.

10th min: Inter Miami have built themselves into this game, and a nice run by Noah Allen down the left sees Luis Suarez feed a cutback to the middle for Lionel Messi near the top of the box. It’s a dangerous position for Messi, but the feed is hot and he can’t control it properly, ultimately allowing a defender to dispossess him. Close for Inter Miami!

4th min: Chance, Palmeiras! The Brazilian side wins the first corner of the game, and Gustavo Gomez rises high to meet the delivery and direct a header on frame, but it’s too central and easily handled by Oscar Ustari.

Palmeiras have dominated possession to begin the game, and are looking to hit Inter Miami up the middle. They’ve come close to a move that penetrates the penalty area, but have thus far been turned away.

Kickoff: They’re under way at Hard Rock Stadium! Palmeiras fans have shown out in a big way, and have displayed their dedication as opening kickoff approaches.

Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Alongside Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras, there is also the other match in Group A, of whose result will directly affect these two clubs. We will keep you updated on that match between Porto and Al Ahly as well, to give you a full picture of the knockout qualification hopes of these clubs!

Here’s the scenarios:

  • Palmeiras advances with a win or draw vs. Inter Miami OR an Al Ahly win or draw vs. Porto
  • Inter Miami advances with a win or draw OR Porto win or draw
  • Porto advance with a win AND Palmeiras defeat AND make up 3 goals differential on Palmeiras
  • Al Ahly advance with win AND Inter Miami defeat AND make up 3 goal differential on Inter Miami

So, Inter Miami fans will want to root for Porto, while Palmeiras fans will be rooting for Al Ahly, and visa versa!

30 mins to kickoff: Sounds like Miami will be honoring one of its title teams at halftime of this match tonight!

45 mins to kickoff: Lionel Messi has arrived at Hard Rock Stadium! It will be interesting to see how the attendance shapes out after the Herons opened the tournament at this stadium in front of a surprisingly sparse crowd.

1 hour to kickoff: With the Inter Miami lineup in, it’s confirmed that Lionel Messi will start the match for the Herons! However, Jordi Alba is still not ready for a place at left-back, meaning Noah Allen moves back out wide and Tomas Aviles comes back in at center-back. Federico Redondo takes over in midfield for Benjamin Cremaschi who was excellent against Porto.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The Palmeiras lineup is in, and they have made a few changes, with at least one in each phase of the game. Most notably, striker Vitor Roque has been rotated out and given a rest ahead of a likely spot in the knockout phase, replaced by Jose Manuel Lopez. Marcos Rocha and Murilo also come in along the back line, while Lucas Evangelista enters in midfield.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Jordi Alba’s jersey has been used by Inter Miami’s social team in pre-match buildup, indicating he’s likely ready to return to the starting lineup after missing the Club World Cup opener and coming off the bench last time out.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Before we look ahead to this match, it’s worth looking back at Lionel Messi’s trademark free-kick goal he scored against Porto to help give the Herons a famous win.

2 hours to kickoff: This match represents one of those curious situations in group-stage knockout football where both teams would qualify with a draw, but going for a victory would be risky because defeat could mean elimination.

Even if there’s no outright conspiracy, a low-scoring affair will call into question each side’s motivation to go for a win! Topping your group comes with the benefit of being seeded, so there’s more of a reason for Inter Miami to take some risks, but even so, qualifying second isn’t enough of a punishment to force them out of their shell.

Inter Miami vs. Palmeiras lineups, team news

While Inter Miami have built their team around Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the rest of the attack is extremely thin in terms of a supporting cast. MLS veteran Fafa Picault is back with the Herons after playing for Haiti in their two World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, departing before the Gold Cup to instead play in the Club World Cup.

Starting goalkeeper Drake Callender has been dealing with a hernia for months and is unlikely to participate in this competition at all after having surgery. Backup Oscar Ustari recovered from a precautionary exit from a late May MLS game and will continue in goal after starring in the team’s first two matches.

Versatile midfielder David Ruiz is back after a muscle issue but only training on his own, as is Yannick BrightJordi Alba has returned from his own hamstring injury came off the bench against Porto, but is still not ready for a start. Almost certainly out is Gonzalo Lujan, who have been absent from training due to hamstring complaints.

They also sport former Barcelona striker Vitor Roque who signed from the La Liga giants last winter. He has scored just three goals for the club since joining, and after drawing blanks in their first two games, he’s been rotated out in favor of Jose Manuel Lopez.

Midfielder Anibal Moreno suffered a thigh injury in their 2-0 win over Al Ahly last time out and has been replaced by Lucas Evangelista. Winger Bruno Rodrigues has a knee problem and has not appeared all season, while 19-year-old midfielder Figueiredo is out for the season with a torn ACL.
