There have been a lot of speculations surrounding Lionel Messi’s future as there were suitors from Saudi Arabia showing interest in the Argentine as he ran out of contract with Inter Miami.
However, recent reports suggest that the Argentine icon will continue to stay in the United States as he is close to renewing his contract with Inter Miami.
While there has been no official confirmation yet, some reports suggest that the 38-year-old may sign a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami, keeping him at the club until 2028.
Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano also spoke on Messi’s renewal ahead of Leagues Cup clash against Necaxa on Saturday.
“Regarding Leo, we all hope he renews his contract,” he said. “It’ll be a decision between him and the club – it’s something they’ve been discussing privately. When the time is right, and if they reach an agreement, they’ll announce it. I also saw those rumors, but all I can say is that we’re all hopeful he’ll stay with us.”
The 38-year-old’s current contract with Inter Miami will expire in December this year but the Herons are desperately working with the forward to sign an extension.

What did Mascherano say about Inter Miami playing several home games?
Inter Miami lost out to eventual winners Columbus Crew in the round of 16 last season in the Leagues Cup.

But this time, Mascherano and Messi are desperate to win the competition, and they started the cup competition with a 2-1 win over Atlas.
One major advantage that Inter Miami will get that they will play majority of their games at home, allowing Messi to rest and recoup.
“Leo made it clear the other day – it was a message between the lines,” Mascherano shared. “He feels much better playing than resting. Before the match against Cincinnati, he was carrying a bit of fatigue, and thankfully he was able to rest.
“We’re lucky to be playing several games at home, we don’t have to travel, and over the next two weeks, we’ll be staying around here, so there shouldn’t be a problem. Unless Leo feels tired and lets us know, the plan is for him to always play.”
The Herons will look to make it two wins in as many games in the Leagues Cup, handing them a little breathing space before heading into the next round.
