Inter Miami boss compares Venezuelan star to Lionel Messi ahead of Club World Cup

Inter Miami are all set and prepared to kick off the Club World Cup in the United States.

After getting back on their feet in the Major League Soccer by concluding their winless streak, Inter Miami will now attempt to win the upcoming competition as first-time participants.

Inter Miami have announced their squad for the Club World Cup, which is led by captain, Lionel Messi. The team includes Venezuelan star Telasco Segovia, who joined the Herons from Portuguese side Casa Pia in January on a four-year deal.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming competition, Inter Miami head coach, Javier Mascherano heaped praise on Segovia, drawing comparisons with Messi and Sergio Busquets.

What did Inter Miami boss say about Lionel Messi’s teammate?

Mascherano hailed (comments via Sporty.com) Segovia’s ‘character on the pitch,’ mentioning that the 22-year-old has a similar understanding of the game as Messi and Busquets.

“The way he’s settled quickly, his character on the pitch, because it’s not easy. Often, you come into a team, and there are certain star players, to come in and do so in the right way and not need time, and he did it based on his character,” he said.

“Because he understands the game, in a similar way to how Sergio Busquets understands it, to the way Lionel Messi understands it. So, in that regard, it’s very easy for him,” added the Argentine coach.

Segovia has netted four goals and provided three assists in 24 appearances for Inter Miami so far.

It remains to be seen how Segovia performs in Messi & Co.’s first match of the Club World Cup, which is against Egyptian side Al Ahly on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida.
