The Seattle Mariners are in desperate need of some thump in their lineup. Their starting rotation is among the best in Major League Baseball, but the offense has not held up its end of the bargain.
As such, Seattle might be forced to consider drastic measures to improve their lineup. Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggests that Seattle should trade right-hander and three-time All-Star Luis Castillo to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Triston Casas and prospect Blaze Jordan.
“The Mariners have one of the best starting rotations in baseball but have been reluctant to trade from that cabinet — and rightfully so. However, if they can’t afford to lure a corner infielder like Pete Alonso, Christian Walker or Alex Bregman in free agency, they will have to move one of their starters to get a power bat. They should keep all of their young starters and be willing to move Castillo, which would also lessen their future financial exposure and potentially help them acquire more bats,” Bowden wrote.
Castillo won 11 games and posted a 3.64 ERA in 30 starts with the Mariners in 2024, also pitching 175 1/3 innings and striking out 175 batters. He could help the Mariners get a haul to improve their offense.
While Casas hasn’t fully blossomed into a star just yet, he has power potential, and a change of scenery could benefit him. Bowden even describes him as a “future 25-30 home run power bat.”
Jordan is also very close to being Major League ready. At Double-A, he slashed .261/.305/.388, so he is another piece that could potentially improve the Mariners offense in the future. Having him in their pipeline would give them some hope for the future.
We’ll see if anything comes of this blockbuster trade idea.
