Insider reveals Dodgers’ surprising trade chip ahead of deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers could subtract from their 2025 Major League Baseball roster to improve other areas of the team ahead of the trade deadline on July 31.

The Dodgers are atop the NL West and will look to bolster the roster ahead of the deadline. One area of need is the bullpen, and MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic revealed Los Angeles could trade Dustin May to help solidify other areas of the roster.

“Left-hander Tanner Scott’s stint on the injured list with elbow inflammation makes the Dodgers’ need for bullpen help even more acute,” Rosenthal wrote. “But how are they going to get it? One way, according to sources briefed on the club’s thinking, might be to trade right-hander Dustin May, a potential free agent who could lose his spot in the rotation once left-hander Blake Snell comes off the injured list.”

May is earning $2.135 million this season and is a pending free agent, which is why the Dodgers could look to move the 27-year-old. When healthy, May is a good starting pitcher, so there could be interest in him.

However, Rosenthal says the Dodgers may look to keep May and put him in the bullpen, but his name has come up as a potential trade chip.

“The Dodgers, if they prefer to keep May, can instead deal from their deep farm system,” Rosenthal wrote.

May is 6-6 with a 4.73 ERA in 18 games, including 17 starts. The right-hander missed all of 2024 due to injuries and only made 9 starts in 2023, as health has been an issue for him.
