Earlier in the week, there were reports suggesting that the Toronto Blue Jays were close to an extension with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Until a deal is finalized, anything could be on the table for a Blue Jays team that doesn’t look to be as good as they need to be to contend in the loaded American League East.
Guerrero, who will go down as one of the best players in franchise history if he continues at this pace, should be someone the Blue Jays want to keep in town.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, he believes the Blue Jays know how much Guerrero wants. He added that there’s a chance Toronto will get a deal done before the deadline, but if it doesn’t, he doesn’t expect Guerrero to be traded for one simple reason.
“I think the Blue Jays know the price it’ll take to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and will come to realize he will cost them even more in the offseason. I do think there’s a chance they sign him before the July 31 trade deadline.
“If they’re in contention, which they should be, I don’t see them trading Guerrero at this point because the window to deal him for a haul of prospects is behind them. The scenario in which he’d be traded is if they’re out of contention and haven’t extended him,” Bowden wrote.

Trading the right-handed slugger for a below-average package wouldn’t make much sense from the Blue Jays’ perspective, but they also don’t want to lose him for nothing.
It’ll be interesting to see, but the best plan would be to extend him to a long-term deal.
