Insider links Mets to $24 million slugging infielder in trade

The New York Mets were aggressive in the offseason, signing Juan Soto, and now one Major League Baseball insider links them to a slugging infielder to further strengthen the lineup.

The Mets have Jeff McNeil at second base, but he’s on the IL. With that, insider David Schoenfield of ESPN believes New York should make a trade for slugging second baseman and outfielder Brandon Lowe from the Tampa Bay Rays.

“So, let’s throw Lowe out there as well as a position player to watch. Like Fairbanks, he’s a potential free agent with a club option for 2026 ($7 million for Fairbanks, $11.5 million for Lowe) that the Rays might not necessarily want to pick up. The Mariners and Astros are possible fits — at least if the Astros continue playing Jose Altuve in left field — and maybe the Mets, either at second base (with Jeff McNeil going to center field) or DH,” Schoenfield wrote.

Lowe is in the final year of his six-year, $24 million deal, but does have a club option for $11.5 million in 2026. Given that Lowe could be a free agent at the end of the year, the cost to acquire him likely wouldn’t be that high, either, which makes the Mets a great fit for him.

With the Mets, Lowe would add another bat to the lineup that can get on base, but can also hit for power.

To begin the 2025 season, Lowe is hitting .233 with 3 home runs and 13 RBIs. But, his career-high is 29 home runs and 99 RBIs, which he accomplished in 2201, as he’s hit 14+ home runs four times in his career, which began in 2018.
