Injury bug arrives at Colts training camp, with one position hit hard

The Colts have been in action at training camp for six practice sessions. They’ve been able to stay healthy in the early going with no significant ailments, but that changed Tuesday.

Head coach Shane Steichen shared after practice that six players are dealing with injuries. Of those six, half are cornerbacks.

JuJu Brents, whose career has been defined by injuries after two seasons, is dealing with a hamstring injury. David Long has a groin ailment as well.

The most significant cornerback injury came in 1-on-1 drills at Tuesday’s practice. Jaylon Jones was seen grabbing at his knee and calf area in what appeared to be a non-contact injury. Jones was carted off the field. Steichen said he’s dealing with a hamstring injury.

While there’s no news on the severity yet, losing Jones for any amount of time is a significant blow. The former seventh-round pick has made a name for himself in Indianapolis and is in the running to be the other perimeter starting cornerback opposite Charvarius Ward on opening day.

Brents can’t afford any more missed time, either. As he, Jones and Justin Walley compete for the third cornerback spot, not being on the field hurts both of their chances, even with Walley being a rookie.

The Colts have an off day Wednesday before an evening practice Thursday, so there’s no real telling how severe these injuries are until more information comes out. But with both potentially sidelined for some time now, Walley has a golden opportunity to cement himself as the starter over the pair of third-year corners.
