Iñaki Peña is a La Masia graduate goalkeeper that has never been really trusted or given the chance to become the first choice goalkeeper at Barcelona. He briefly had a loan spell at Galatasaray but that didn’t amount to anything concrete for his future.
After being the backup for many years, he got a run of games when Ter Stegen went down and did not impress Hansi Flick. He was displaced by Szczesny after the winter break and was never given another chance.
It’s clear that he doesn’t have a place in this Barcelona team, but many factors have made his future unclear.
Prior to Friday night, he was the only goalkeeper registered for the season meaning Barcelona couldn’t sell him in case they couldn’t register Joan Garcia.
The club still won’t let him go until they can register Szczesny as the backup goalkeeper.
According to Marca, these registration problems and Barca’s uncertainty are clouding his future.
In this same report it says Barca’s uncertainty comes from an indecision whether to sell him permanently or extend his deal, which ends in 2026, and loan him out.
Currently Peña has garnered interest from Cesc Fabregas’s Como and has suitors all around La Liga.
Extending him would seem like a strange decision as Barcelona really don’t have a need for Peña and it seems like Peña is determined to find playing time.
Either way his future needs to be decided soon as the farther this goes in the window, the less options either party will have.
