Ian Wright says Chelsea need to sign someone like their former captain to lead their defence

Former Arsenal star Ian Wright believes that Chelsea need to sign someone like their former captain Thiago Silva to lead the team’s defence next season.

As the 2024-25 campaign comes to an end, Chelsea find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and the semifinal of the UEFA Conference League.

Regardless of how the Blues finish their season from here on, they are set for an overhaul in the summer with a number of players leaving and joining the club.

The Stamford Bridge management is set to back Enzo Maresca in the upcoming summer transfer window as he is on the lookout for several players to bolster his squad.

Chelsea are said to be in the market for a central defender, and Ian Wright has advised them on the kind of player they should sign to lead the backline next season.

Speaking on The Kelly & Wrighty Show, he said: “Remember they signed Thiago Silva a few years ago, they need experience… I think the midfield and defence, they do need an experienced player to let them know what’s going on on the pitch and calm them down.”

Leading from the back

Silva, who spent four years at Chelsea between 2020 and 2024, left them last summer on a free transfer when his contract expired. Interestingly, the 40-year-old defender is still playing in his native Brazil with Fluminense.

Even though he joined the Blues in the latter stages of his career, he was still a major influence on and off the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea defence has looked at sixes and sevens at times this season, and they do need an experienced head to guide them at the back. Wright’s assessment of the situation is accurate, and it will be interesting to see who Chelsea signs as their centre-back this summer.
