‘I believe in this club’: GM Dana Brown remains confident in Astros despite recent struggles

The Houston Astros currently lead the American League West by one game over the Seattle Mariners. The Astros have struggled since the All-Star break, holding the eighth-worst record in the MLB.

However, because the rest of the AL West has struggled as well, the Astros remain in prime position for another postseason run. But, Houston needs to break out of its slump if it wants to secure a playoff spot.

Astros’ general manager Dana Brown appeared on 790’s “The Sean Salisbury Show” on Wednesday, and talked about the Astros struggles since the All-Star break.

Brown Remains Confident in His Club

The Astros have struggled since the All-Star break, and it’s been particularly bad since the end of August. Houston has lost its last two series and hasn’t won a series since the Colorado Rockies came to town over 10 days ago.

However, Brown remains confident in his group.

“Think about this, we’ve gone through this entire season with all the ebbs and flows of injuries, and the ups and downs, and these guys have continued to maintain and hold on to what’s dear to our heart, and that’s getting back to the postseason and getting deep into the postseason,” Brown said. “We just need to get hot. We need to get hot soon.”

The Astros could certainly use a cushion down the stretch, and getting hot would be nice. Brown mentioned any team can get hot, and if Houston rattles off five or six straight wins, all of a sudden the Astros’ lead in the division could be very comfortable.

However, that means the production on the field has to be better. The Astros rank in the bottom half of the league in hits, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and on-base plus slugging percentage.

In fact, Houston’s BA, OBP and OPS are all in the bottom-seven of the MLB. But, Brown believes the guys in the lineup have the talent, it just needs to come to life in September and October.

“These guys are really good. If you look up and down our lineup, the lineups good. We’re good enough, we just have to get the job done,” Brown said. “Make no mistake, this club is good enough.”

The Astros have made the postseason in eight straight years. Although there’s been shifts in players each year, Houston’s core has relatively stayed intact and the Astros have sustained success over the last decade.

Houston has 16 games remaining to make their push for the postseason in 2025, and that starts on Wednesday for the rubber match game against the Toronto Blue Jays, who currently hold the second-best record in the AL.
