The Los Angeles Chargers are already in the thick of training camp, with having to open the preseason next Thursday night in the annual Hall of Fame Game.
This offseason, Raheim Sanders was one of the most exciting names the team signed in the undrafted free-agent process. The hype train was barrelling down the tracks with some predictions even suggesting the team could favor Sanders over Najee Harris.
Wow.
With six practices already in the books, Sanders has done next to nothing as he is dealing with an injury. There are only 11 training camp practices left and four preseason games, so time is not on his side.
Jim Harbaugh said that Rashawn Slater is working through a “minor” injury, but didn’t give a timeline for when he’d return.

It is difficult for rookies to miss any time in training camp because each rep they get is so vital. It is even worse for undrafted players who aren’t guaranteed much besides an invite to camp. Draft picks were brought to the roster with a valuable pick and for that reason alone, usually make the team. For undrafted players, the team invested nothing (aside from a small contract) for them to be there.

This means that Sanders is already firmly behind the 8-ball this summer. And that’s a shame, because a huge opportunity exists in the backfield. Omarion Hampton and Harris are going to be the top two backs, but it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen beyond that, as it’s hard to tell how the team really feels about last year’s sixth-round pick, Kimani Vidal.
It looks as though Sanders is going to miss the next several practices, at the least, and likely won’t suit up for next Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Time is ticking and it’s not on Sanders’ side.
