Joe Joyce vs Filip Hrgovic Fight Preview

Joe Joyce and Filip Hrgovic are all set to reignite a rivalry from 2013.

The heavyweight pair met as amateurs in the World Boxing Series in 2013, which saw Joyce’s hand raised after an action-packed five-round fight.

It was the Londoner’s workrate that was able to overwhelm and exhaust the Croatian to attain the win on a split decision.

Fast-forward 13 years to 2025 and the landscape is very different indeed. 39-year-old Joyce is the home fighter, but currently the underdog at the bookies.

The puncher from Putney has won just once from his last four outings, but not only that, his once-solid armour has now been penetrated and severely weakened.

Known as ‘The Juggernaut’, the Londoner was able to walk through anything his opponents had to offer, but that invincibility has been shattered after back-to-back knockout defeats to Zhilei Zhang, an opponent Hrgovic has beaten himself.

He was then dropped and decisioned by Derek Chisora in his last fight in July 2024, which displays just how far the former WBO #1 has fallen.

Croatian ‘Animal’ Hrgovic also comes into this contest following defeat. The ex-IBF #1 was stopped in round eight by now-world champion, Daniel Dubois, which is an opponent that Joyce has already defeated.

Despite a bright start, Hrgovic tired after receiving cuts over both eyes and was halted on the ringside doctor’s advice less than a minute into the eighth round.

The visitor is the favourite to win this 10-round heavyweight contest, likely due to his speed, skill and rangy, accurate straight shots which will inevitably find the stationary target in front of him.

Shared opponent, Daniel Dubois, agrees with the crowd, “I think Hrgovic can win it, he’s got a good style. He’s had the time to rebuild, so I’m looking forward to it.”
