One more goal. That’s all Alex Ovechkin needs to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the sole possession of the all-time goals record.
The 39-year-old scored two goals against the Blackhawks on Friday, tying the all-time record of 894 goals. He had numerous opportunities to score a third but failed to do so. He even declined to play during the empty net because he didn’t want to score the record-breaking goal that way.
Ovechkin will continue the hunt Sunday, April 6 against the Islanders, a Metro division rival. This game will be at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, so he won’t have his home fans cheering him on in Washington, D.C.
The Islanders will likely start either Ilya Sorokin or Marcus Hogberg in between the pipes. Ovechkin will have to find netting against of these goaltenders to break the record.
That being said, Ovechkin has never scored a goal against Sorokin. He’s scored 44 goals in 71 career games against the Islanders. Sorokin began his NHL career with New York during the 2020-21 season.
Ovechkin has scored in four straight games, but the Islanders should put up major resistance. They’re still holding onto some playoff hopes, and no goal wants to be remembered as the one who allowed the record-breaking goal.
