Despite a rocky finish to the first half of their season, the Detroit Tigers are still the best team in the MLB.
But even this Superman-esque team still has one major kryptonite: their bullpen.
As a matter of fact, the bullpen is the big reason that the team struggled so mightily right before the break happened.
And most would think that the Tigers are hatching some elaborate trade deadline scheme to land some of the game’s prime relievers such as Ryan Helsley or Emmanuel Clase to their bullpen.
However, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Detroit could solve their bullpen dilemma without having to enter any superstar sweepstakes, by signing free agent reliever David Robertson.
The 40-year-old former closer has been targeted by two of his former teams up to this point, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, and it wouldn’t hurt the Tigers to enter the conversation as well as they continue to trend towards the playoffs as the best team in the MLB, let alone in the American League.
Robertson was named an All-Star in 2011 and won the 2009 World Series with the Yankees, before becoming somewhat of a journeyman after his second stint with the Bronx Bombers in 2018, including last year with the Texas Rangers, proving with a 3.00 ERA and 99 strikeouts that he still has plenty of prime production left in his tank, though he is clearly in the waning part of his career.
