The 2025 Masters champion revealed this week that he cleared out the tournament shop, purchasing every pin flag that was left on the shelves. The plan? Sign them all.
“I’ve waited 17 years to sign that flag in the middle,” McIlroy said ahead of the Tour Championship in Atlanta. “I’ll never complain about doing it.”
Seventeen years of waiting
McIlroy’s dramatic playoff win over Justin Rose at Augusta ended one of golf’s longest storylines. For nearly two decades, he had chased the final piece of the puzzle to complete the career Grand Slam. One birdie putt sealed it, and suddenly he joined the exclusive group of Masters champions.

Tradition dictates that only the Masters winner signs inside the outline of the U.S. on the iconic flag logo. For McIlroy, that small detail made the massive purchase worth it.
Life With the Green Jacket
The Northern Irishman admits the reality of being Masters champion has felt surreal. He wore the jacket through the night of his victory and briefly at the Association of Golf Writers’ dinner during the British Open, but otherwise it mostly hangs in his wardrobe at home.
“I always thought if I won it, I’d never take it off,” McIlroy said. “But it hasn’t been that way.”
Rory will start the Tour Championship as the No. 2 golfer in the world behind Scottie Scheffler. The two will start their round on Thursday at East Lake at 1 pm ET.
