How old is Matthew Stafford?
Stafford is 37 years old. He’ll turn 38 on Feb. 7.
Drafted by the Lions with the first overall pick in the 2009 draft, Stafford has spent 17 seasons in the league. He found a fountain of youth in his later years, capturing his first Super Bowl at 34 after producing one of the best statistical seasons of his career in 2021. After a shaky 2022 campaign, Stafford led the Los Angeles team to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2023 and 2024.
Oldest player in NFL 2025 season
While Stafford is plenty wily, he’s neither the oldest player nor the oldest quarterback in the NFL today. That title belongs to Aaron Rodgers. The Pittsburgh Steelers gunslinger is the one of a handful of players north of 40 currently signed to an NFL roster.

With a birthday of Dec. 2, 1983, Rodgers, 41, just edges Buffalo Bills kicker Matt Prater for the title of the league’s oldest player. Other notable veterans include Nick Folk (40) and Joe Flacco (40).
Among quarterbacks, Stafford is the third-oldest primary starter, trailing only Rodgers and Flacco.

During the offseason, Stafford was granted permission to speak with other sides, including the Las Vegas Raiders. In the end, he opted to stay with the Rams, agreeing to a restructured contract that sees him earn $44 million in 2025 and $40 million in 2026. Stafford’s $42 million average annual value is the 16th-highest among QBs, $2.5 million more than Geno Smith.
