How many people watched Super Bowl 59? Eagles vs. Chiefs boasts largest audience in history despite blowout

While the game and its final score were lopsided, there was no shortage of entertainment during Super Bowl 59.

From the pregame homage to its host city of New Orleans to Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show and Jalen Hurts’ MVP performance, the big game had a little of everything. And while Eagles fans left happier than anyone else, millions of viewers left satisfied with at least one element of the Super Bowl’s production.

Philadelphia denied Kansas City’s pursuit of a three-peat in dominant fashion. The Eagles scored the first 34 points of the game before the Chiefs made up for it on the back end in a somewhat presentable 40-22 loss.

The storylines were endless. Saquon Barkley rewrote history by becoming the leader for total rushing yards in a single season including the playoffs, DeVonta Smith became the first player drafted from Alabama to score in the Super Bowl and the domination of Philadelphia’s stifling defense was highlighted by rookie Cooper DeJean’s pick-six.

Off the field, the star-studded audience featured the likes of Bradley Cooper, Kevin Hart, Anne Hathaway, and, of course, Taylor Swift.

The result of the above was the most-watched event in NFL history. Here’s what you need to know.

How many people watched Super Bowl 59?

The Eagles vs. Chiefs Super Bowl drew an average of 126 million viewers across all platforms, Fox announced on Monday night. That figure represents a record-breaking total in the event’s history. It peaked at 135.7 million watchers.

The numbers should not come as much of a surprise given the high-profile nature of the matchup. It was the second meeting between Philadelphia and Kansas City in three years, with the two teams running back the matchup from Super Bowl 57.

Given the passionate nature of each team’s fanbases — and their detractors — many stayed around despite the one-sided nature of Sunday’s proceedings.

In addition to the game itself, Lamar’s halftime show was a major draw. In some ways, the showing was viewed as the exclamation point that ended a nearly year-long rap feud with Drake.

While the ratings for Super Bowl 59 have not yet been released, it’s fair to expect a high number on par with the average viewership.
