How did Cowboys beat the Giants? Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey nails two clutch field goals to secure overtime win

The New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys played in an instant classic in the early afternoon Week 2 window. 

The Giants entered the week with questions about QB Russell Wilson’s job security. New York head coach Brian Daboll even implemented packages that utilized rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. At one point, it felt like he didn’t know who he wanted to go with, and the two were nearly alternating snaps in the second half. However, with the game on the line, Wilson executed an impressive drive late in the fourth quarter to give the Giants a late lead. 

There were five lead changes in the final quarter of the game, with three of them happening within the last three minutes of regulation. The game went into overtime and nearly ended a tie, but fortunately for the Cowboys, Brandon Aubrey showed everyone why he is considered one of the best kickers in the NFL.

How did the Giants-Cowboys game end?

The fourth quarter of the game began with the Cowboys making a 44-yard field goal to make the score 20-16 in their favor. What followed next was one of the wildest quarters in recent NFL history.

Skattebo scores first career touchdown

On the fourth play of the Giants first drive of the fourth quarter, rookie running back Cam Skattebo took a carry the middle of the defense for 24 yards before being tackled at the one-yard line. He was called upon the very next play and punched it in for his first career touchdown.

Cowboys take a 27-23, thanks to new acquisition Miles Sanders

Dallas got the ball with 12 minutes left in the game and had a nearly six-minute drive, eating up half the time left in the quarter. The Cowboys ran a balanced offense as quarterback Dak Prescott hit both CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, and Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders picked up yards on the ground. 

The drive ended with Sanders scoring a touchdown on a four-yard rush.

Giants answer with 32-yard strike from Wilson to Robinson

New York got the ball and proceed to move down the field quickly hanks to some poor defensive play by the Cowboys. Wilson is known for his floating, high-arching passes and dropped one in Wan’Dale Robinson’s hands in the end zone on fourth down for a 32-yard touchdown.

Cowboys score another touchdown on pass to George Pickens

Dallas started the next drive with 2:44 left in the game and the offense moved noticeably quicker, utilizing the sidelines to stop the clock. The drive ended on a six-yard pass from Prescott to Pickens for a touchdown. It looked at the time that Prescott had tied former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo with 24 fourth-quarter comebacks, but the Giants had something else in mind.

Russ turns back the clock with 48-yard TD strike to Nabers

New York got the ball with 52 seconds left in the gam and Wilson took advantage of his receivers’ ability to beat Dallas’ secondary. He threw another patented moon ball to Malik Nabers for a 48-yard touchdown.

Cowboys execute last-minute drive, Aubrey nails game-tying kick

After watching its lead disappear in an instant, the Dallas Cowboys responded again. Prescott hit tight end Jake Ferguson for an 18-yard gain. and another short run put the Cowboys in field goal range late as Brandon Aubrey was stared down a 64-yard field goal to tie the game. As Aubrey attempted the kick, the ball wobbled different directions mid-flight, but ultimately sailed through the uprights, to send the game to overtime.

Dallas finds a way to win in overtime thanks to Aubrey’s golden leg

In overtime, Dallas won the toss and elected to receive.  The NFL’s new overtime rules require each team to have a possession and the Cowboys got the ball, but saw their offense stall at their own 42-yard line and they were forced to punt. Similarly, the Giants were unable to get anything going on the team’s first possession of overtime and punted it back to Dallas. 

The Cowboys got the ball with 4:52 left in the overtime period and again couldn’t muster any movement, forcing Dallas to punt it back to New York. 

With just 2:49 left in the game. Wilson found his running back for a short reception, but lost four yards. He attempted to throw another deep pass, but the ball hung in the air too long and was picked off by Dallas at their own 31-yard line with just two minutes left. 

The Cowboys took over again with two minutes to go in overtime and Prescott hit George Pickens for a 27-yard gain as hey entered field goal range. After a short run, Prescott was pressured, but escaped up the middle of the field for a gain of 17 yards. Aubrey then nailed a 46-yard field goal to give Dallas the 40-37 overtime victory. 

Aubrey became the first player in NFL history to make a field goal as time expired in regulation to force overtime, who then made the game-winning field goal as time-expired in overtime.
