Chelsea might be planning a sensational move for Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
The Blues are reportedly eyeing the 32-year-old as an upgrade to their current No. 1, Robert Sanchez.
Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has fueled speculation, suggesting Chelsea “could get him” if Villa fails to secure Champions League football next season.
Martinez has been a standout performer for both club and country. After helping Argentina clinch the 2022 World Cup and earning two FIFA Best Goalkeeper awards, his reputation as one of the best in the world has only grown.
He signed a long-term deal with Villa, keeping him at the club until 2029, but his ambitions might push him toward new challenges.

Darren Bent explains how Chelsea could sign Emi Martinez
Martinez joined Aston Villa in 2020 and has since recorded 60 clean sheets in 182 matches, playing a pivotal role in Villa’s rise.
Last season, his heroics helped the team secure Champions League qualification with a fourth-place Premier League finish.
However, Villa’s current sixth-place position raises concerns about their ability to stay among the league’s elite. Bent believes this uncertainty could tempt Martinez to move.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “If they don’t get the Champions League… could he go? He could play for almost any team he wanted to. Chelsea could get him.”
Chelsea’s need for a goalkeeper
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation remains shaky. Robert Sanchez’s inconsistent form has left the team vulnerable, while backups like Filip Jorgensen have been limited to cup appearances.
Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, is second in the Premier League and poised to return to the Champions League next season, making them an attractive destination for Martinez.
While no official approach has been made, Chelsea’s ambition and Martinez’s elite skills could make this transfer a reality.
Losing Martinez would be a huge blow to Villa, but it could be the missing piece Chelsea needs to challenge for the title.
