October baseball won’t include the Houston Astros for the first time in a decade.
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead against the Los Angeles Angels the Astros’ postseason hopes ended abruptly. News from Cleveland confirmed their fate during the game, as wins by the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers mathematically eliminated Houston from playoff contention on the penultimate day of the regular season.

What a truly remarkable run by the Astros from 2017-2024:
– 8 consecutive trips to the postseason
– 2 World Series championships
– 4 American League pennants
– 7 straight trips to the ALCS
– 7 AL West titles
– 99 playoff games
– Countless champagne celebrations— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) September 28, 2025
The elimination snaps the Astros’ seven-year streak of postseason appearances. This run included two World Series championships (2017 and 2022), four American League pennants, and consistent dominance in the AL West. Houston’s struggles down the stretch proved costly. They failed to keep pace in the wild-card chase, leaving them on the outside looking in while Detroit and Cleveland clinched the final playoff spots.
The Texas Rangers have also been eliminated from postseason contention for 2025 and will not be part of the American League playoff field this year. Despite holding an 81-79 record as of Saturday, their playoff hopes officially ended before the regular season finale. The Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox have secured the AL playoff spots.
