Home Sweet Home? Rangers must fix road struggles to stay in AL Wild Card hunt

The Texas Rangers are one of the best home teams in baseball this season. At Globe Life Field, they’ve posted an impressive 36–20 record, using their home crowd and familiar surroundings to gain a crucial edge. But away from Arlington, it’s a completely different story — and it’s the one that could cost them a trip to October.

The Rangers’ road record sits at a disappointing 24–35, one of the worst in the AL West and among the bottom-tier marks in the American League. That stark contrast — a .636 win rate at home versus a .407 clip on the road — highlights just how dependent this team has become on home-field advantage.

Despite the inconsistency away from home, Texas has managed to stay firmly in the postseason conversation. At 60–55 overall, the Rangers are just half a game behind the Yankees for the final AL Wild Card spot and remain within striking distance of the Mariners and Red Sox as well. A big reason for that? Their +71 run differential is one of the best in the league. It’s a stat that suggests they’re not just winning — they’re winning convincingly when things are going right.

Pitching has helped keep them in the race. Nathan Eovaldi recently delivered a masterclass performance, tossing eight shutout innings in a 2–0 win over the Yankees to lower his ERA to a league-best 1.38. Pair that with the return of Jacob deGrom and the newly acquired Merrill Kelly (3.22 ERA, 121 strikeouts in 2025), and Texas now boasts one of the more dangerous rotations in the league. But if those arms don’t show up on the road, the effort may be wasted.

The team knows what’s at stake. With a schedule that includes crucial away series down the stretch, Texas can’t afford to coast and hope its home-field magic will be enough. A few key road wins could be the difference between playing in October or watching from home.

If the Rangers can manage even to approach .500 away from Arlington the rest of the way, their odds of securing a Wild Card spot skyrocket. The talent is there — the pitching is clicking, and the offense has proven it can erupt. But consistency on the road is the last hurdle.

The path to the postseason is open. But it won’t be paved at home.
